It was like a dream.

Where you fall from the sky.

You go through a thousand of them.

Although, this one is quite different.

Old places from your childhood never vanish.

And transition from one place to the next with directional light.

You can see without glasses.

So you inspect everything from this world.

Knowing full well that it could all wash away swiftly.

Make use of your time here.

This evening was the best meal from my trip. A simple NY steak with salt, pepper, love and sprinkled laughter.

Sometimes you find yourself on an uncharted path.

Until you realize that you have been there before.

Because the longer you are there the more you remember. Hi Grandma!

Old friends reunite here.

Some of them are vaguely familiar.

While others you will never forget.

So giggle...

amongst your catch and...

play for all it's worth.

Because you live in this place.

Run your hand against the wall to make sure it's real.

For when the time comes, the light returns to lift you away.

To deliver you with hope that if you remember correctly it can be done all over again.

This Saturday, Giant Robot will host a “special” art exhibition for the benefit of Giant Robot 2 – the gallery space. The goal is for the space to be self sustaining as an art space in 2012 and on. Scroll through these pictures real quick. That's how my trip felt. I'm glad that it consisted of hanging out with old and new friends, adventures in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn, food, drinks, and what else?. Aggrr! It was seriously a blur. I wish I had taken more photographs to remember them. But thank you to all my friends (thanks Chris for the additional pictures) who made this trip worth taking!!!

Jeni Yang mails the sweetest letters on the sweetest cards. This one is from Taiwan with a transparent film of Green Island. She says it's a beautiful place for scuba diving. I bet, Jeni! It reminds me of the summers when we used to camp on the island of Lanai. Like this photo, the sunsets were spectacular. We met Joe Montana and his son there. On another day, we were included in a group shot for a bikini shoot which we never received our copies. The camp site no longer exists and is now the address of the Four Seasons Resort Lana’i at Manele Bay.

"Year of the Labbit" at the Japanese American National Museum

On Thursday, July 14, the Japanese American National Museum will open the exhibition, "The Year of the Labbit" featuring customized toys designed by Frank Kozik by artists such as: Christina Conway, Mark Nagata, Stan Sakai, Mike Shinoda, Yoskay Yamamoto, and me (the black one above is my contribution). And speaking of Stan Sakai, there will also be a retrospective exhibition of his work including original drawings and paintings that spans 25 years of his character, Usagi Yojimbo. I am really stoked to see it. I've seen Stan almost every year at the San Diego Comic Convention but I never had the balls to approach him. Maybe this show might be my chance. Maybe your chance too.

From left to right: Amazing example of Culver City architecture. I have been itching to draw this exact house for awhile now and I am really stoked that this is now in my sketchbook. Have you been here? Then, I found this mysteriously hidden Indian temple (originally discovered a few months ago). Then, last week, I returned with friends from India to attend service and record my findings with my trusty assistant, a black Moleskine. I tried to capture the serene beauty of this location and I vow to go back again to attempt this feat.

I've been on a road trip and missed the opportunity to post about a great show that opened in Toronto last week. Did you see it? It's by my friends, Andrew Hem and Tessar Lo. This show encompasses the continuation of Tessar Lo's whimsical yet experimental discovery of ones own identity (read his interview with Art Investigator, Amanda Erlanson). Coinciding Mr. Lo's solo efforts is the introduction of Andrew Hem's unique artwork to the citizens of Canada. Andrew produced art that includes sculptural works alongside graffiti-inspired stencils which replicates his painting style remarkably well. Go see them both!

The Japan Situation

My cousin was in Sendai at the time the tsunami hit. With the inability to reach her by phone our family impatiently waited. It troubled me. But the next day, we were relieved to hear from her. My family was lucky but it's tough to admit others are not. My friend Norine and I met the fine volunteers of the Tzu Chi Foundation hustling to raise money and awareness. We made our donations and I hope it goes to the people that need it the most.

Giant Robot and UNICEF are doing their part too. They are hosting a group art show that will benefit the people of Japan. My contribution to this show is this painting above entitled, "Contained."

Excursion: Greystone Mansion and Park

Let's go on a excursion. For those of you who are not in California, we are in Beverly Hills.

And, this is Greystone Mansion. It has a bizarre history. Today, it stands as a public park, architectural landmark and filming location (that's why this looks familiar to you). Built atop 12.58 acres, the mansion which covers 46,054 square feet of it, is one of the largest family estate built in Beverly Hills.

Excursion: Culver City Park Interpretive Nature Trail

Across from the Boneyard (dog park) in the Culver City Park, is a long ramp that zigzags up a cliff. This is the Interpretive Nature Trail, a 20 minute trail designed for wheelchair accessibility, the visually impaired and the casual trailblazer. You can even blaze through this trail in slippers, which I did yesterday. I noticed allot of business men and woman taking on the trek during their lunch break. So we will avoid taking their photo.

The trail drops you off at two spectacular images.

One, a giant sundial.

Two, a 3 point perspective of Culver City, Santa Monica, and Marina Del Rey. Also that reminds me, check out my previous post about another Culver City gem. Now, why did I not notice these sooner? Well, now you know too and I hope you take the time to discover a Culver City treasure.

Excursion: Maui Telescopes

Sorry that my first post of 2011 is from 2010. But this is a fun excursion I want to share with all of you. Our family friends, the Jannis' recently gave us a tour of the telescopes atop Haleakala on the island of Maui. We were given access to this location because, just by chance, Dr. Joseph Janni is the Director of the Air Force Office Research.

Oh, here I am with my Brother, Mom and Dad. Yes, it was very cold.

We were able to visit 2 of the major telescopes. The first one we visited (clam shell roof) is privately managed and maintained by LCOGT, founded by Wayne Rosing, a pioneer in the development of Google. He was also given permission to use the same font and color for his company. LCOGT runs 2 telescopes. The other one is in Australia. They are both operated via scheduled internet sessions.

Another telescope we visited is planted here (on the right). It's the largest telescope on the island of Maui. Dr. Janni noted that based on the conditions and visibility, it is situated in the best location in the world. Since we were in a military facility, this is as close as I was allowed to photograph the telescope. Walking around the telescope you get a sense of how enormous it is. I wish I could show you. It finally feels like the holiday season. LA is wet, I cant feel my feet and the Post-It Show returns to Giant Robot Los Angeles. Here are 7 drawings I am contributing for this show. They are interpretations of one of my favorite Japanese television shows, Kamen Rider.
About the Post-It Show: all you really need to know is that all contributors were asked to submit art on a post-it, many of them start at $20.00 each, and it is cash and carry. Meaning once you purchase it, you take it home. So earlier attendees will have the opportunity to purchase from a wider selection of art including: Ana Bagayan, Gary Baseman, Tim Biskup, Dave Cooper, Matt Groening, David Jien, Andrew Hem, Seonna Hong, Ming Ong, Nathan Ota, Souther Salazar, Rob Sato and many more.

"Small Gift" Celebrating 50 Years of Sanrio

Was that all a blur? Last night we went to the private opening for the "Small Gift" show that Sanrio presented inside the Barker Hanger. My friend, Jamie Rivadeneira helped put this thing together. She went above and beyond to make people happy. You will experience this when you visit the show. I'm limiting the photos to not spoil your fun. But, I'll say this place will make you feel like a kid again. Small Gift opens to the public starting Friday, November 12. Also, be nice and thank Jamie for a job well done. Thank you Jamie! "The Mini Show" SUCCESS!

I still can't believe it. So much support poured into our show that evening. I mean cups of it! To be more accurate, around 300 supporters came out for "The Mini Show" to raise $15,000. It was a huge success!!! Thanks to all of the Artists (especially Eli Trinh for making it out by parting ways with his UFC tickets and earlier plans. "The Mini Show" PREVIEW!

A few months back, my friend Ming Lai asked if friends would help to put an art show together on behalf of the Mini Lai Scholarship Fund. This fund is in memory of our dear friend Mini Lai and supports Art Center students that are in need of financial assistance. Of course everyone agreed! We set up the show yesterday in preparation of the grand opening today, Saturday, October 23. I ran home to my computer so I could share with you a few pictures of our set up. We had a blast preparing this show for you. It also reminds me of how fun, goofy and altogether lucky we are to have each other. Tonight, I realized that The Mini Lai Scholarship Fund symbolizes the everlasting power of friendship. I mean, look at these smiles.
Among those happy faces, you can preview amazing talent in these photographs. From the next generation of contemporary artists to the current king, Mark Ryden. He was kind enough to donate a print of “The Tree of Life” which was produced to commemorate his Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles exhibit. I had 2 phone messages when I returned home that evening. One from my friend Olivia and the other from Ming who is Mini's Brother. I knew it was something bad. I heard the tears in Olivia's voice. Ming was strong and professional, but his message projected urgency.
They were about to tell me the news that my friend Mini had passed away. See, although she had the biggest loving heart, physically, she was born with a weak one. A new heart transplant saved her life, but brought on complications.
The phone continued to ring from friends reaching out to each other. I remember sitting in front of my phone, observing the machine as it recorded their messages. Selfishly, for just a moment, I wanted to believe if I didn't acknowledge her death. she was just around doing her errands.
It's 8 years later. With the support of the California Community Foundation, we have continued to keep Mini alive through her memorial scholarship fund. All of the money we raise goes towards the financial need of students at the Art Center College of Design. And, through the fabulous support of friends, artists and sponsors, we have a charity art show in her honor. The show is a one-night-don't-miss-it event. Participating artists include: Mark Ryden, The Clayton Brothers, Tara McPherson, Andrew Hem, Martha Rich, little me, and many more. You can get all your information here. SugiPOP at the Portsmouth Museum of Art

Here is my contribution to this gigantic exhibition at the Portsmouth Museum of Art. It's an honor to show alongside Takashi Murakami and Hokusai. In fact, it's kind of a surreal experience. Especially because I am just a guy that draws doodles in a corner of his room and then to see it up in a museum is quite an experience. To top it off, my painting will hang alongside my friends, Andrew Hem, Gary Baseman and Yoskay Yamamoto. Want to learn more about this exhibit?

PORTSMOUTH, NH – ‘SugiPOP!: The Influence of Anime and Manga on Contemporary Art’ opens on October 13th at the Portsmouth Museum of Art. The show is a collaborative effort, co-curated by Beau Basse of LeBasse Projects in Los Angeles and Katherine Doyle of the Portsmouth Museum of Art. It features the work of approximately 30 artists tracing the originations of manga, the rise of Japanese Contemporary Art and into how the art forms have influenced artists around the world.

Sugi, the Japanese word for ‘too much,’ represents the extreme characteristics of Japanese manga and anime, which have merged with the American phenomenon of Pop, to become SugiPOP - a blend of Japanese and American contemporary art shaped and defined by over-the-top pop.

The exhibition features an international roster of artists including Japanese masters Hokusai and Kuniyoshi in a display of original Edo period woodblock prints. The exhibit also features Japanese Contemporary artists Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara, Yoshitaka International artists contributing to the exhibit include KAWS, Gary Baseman, Simone Legno, Natalia Fabia, Tomokazu Matsuyama, Yumiko Kayukawa, Seonna Hong, Hush, Morgan Slade, Edwin Ushiro, Luke Chueh, Andrew Hem, Mike Shinoda, Yoskay Yamamoto and more. Finally the exhibition includes original cels from some of the most significant anime films ever made, including Cowboy Bebop and Princess Mononoke. Amano, Mr., Ai Yamaguchi, Junko Mizuno and Hisashi Tenmyouya.

SugiPOP! Opens on October 13, 2010 and runs through January 16, 2011, with an Opening Reception on October 14th from 5:30 to 7:30 . The Portsmouth Museum of Art is located at One Harbour Place in downtown Portsmouth. Admission is free. Hours of operation for the Portsmouth Museum of Art are Wednesday-Sunday, 11:00-5:00, Fridays until 8:00; it is closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Thank goodness I won the Trader Joe's raffle earlier this month. Look at all my free groceries. This was due to the raffle which is held weekly. If you bring your own bags, the cashier will give you a raffle ticket to fill out. Then you will be entered into their weekly raffle for a Trader Joe's gift certificate.
If I remember correctly, winners were supposed to get their photo taken, like in Vegas, or when you eat a gigantic bowl of ramen in 1 hour. I guess they don't do that anymore. Dang it! And I already forgot the secret raffle winner hand shake the store manager taught me.

The 3 days in Seattle just flew by. Look at these happy faces. In my previous post, I offered to give you a die-cut chicken if you shared a ghost story with me. Visitors shared their spooky stories which made me wary of what may lurk amid the evening night. Aside from the fright-fest, thank you. I enjoyed each and every story. Also thanks to the Art Institute of Seattle kids that introduced themselves with horrifyingly incredible stories. Their ghost tales weren't bad either. Many praises goes out to the press who got the word out...

A Laborious Day Weekend!

Well, it kind of felt that way after being a hermit for the past couple of months. Labor Day weekend allowed me to return to social activities after all my painting obligations were completed. It started on Friday visiting the lovely ladies at LeBasse Projects. Then I attended Nathan Ota's show with friends Andrew Hem, Amanda Erlanson and Nate Frizzell. Saturday was catch up time with my old school chumps. Sunday was Pasadena City College Flea Market time with my East side crew. Monday ended with a bbq and a messy saucy face. And all I have to show for it is these weird flea market finds. What was your weekend like?

Hello blog readers! I wanted to share with you some new pieces I did on my birthday. They were sent to GRNY for their upcoming Post-it Show 5. I submitted pieces that was not typical of the art I do. Instead, my contribution are things that I would be excited to find at this show. Traditionally, Post-it shows are cash-n-carry. Meaning you choose your selection, purchase it, and take it home immediately. Participating artist include: Tim Biskup, Mari Inukai, Jacob Magraw-Mickelson, Brendan Monroe, Saelee Oh and curated by artists Mark Todd and Esther Pearl Watson. Aron Wiesenfeld Retrospective at Bakersfield Museum of Art

Yesterday my friends and I took a trip up north. Destination, Bakersfield. Participants, Blogger Amanda Erlanson, Jack Muramatsu and Artist, Andrew Hem. It's about a 2 hour drive from Los Angeles. An IPhone with music and good conversations are drastically needed for such an occasion. While fighting heavy winds on the 99 fwy you have a panoramic view of landscapes with sporadic evidence of a California wildflower season ending. Our first stop... food!

After a drive like this we were all starving for lunch. This is Arizona Cafe. Yelp said it was 5 stars. We thought otherwise.

What I love best about these towns are the abandoned buildings. One local told me that this used to be a restaurant. It burned down.

Our main goal. It's Artist, Aron Wiesenfeld's first Museum Exhibition and it's a retrospective. Also, Aron is just 37 yrs old. The collection of artwork had been selected from his west coast collectors. They include 10 paintings, 6 drawings and 1 etching. Here are a few of my favorites...

If you are a fan of Aron's work, you should definitely drop by this show. It can be difficult to gather art for a retrospective. And since these are all from private collections, who knows if they will be displayed in public again. So check it out while you can!

Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook

Culver City never ceases to amaze me. Early yesterday morning I attempted to check out what I thought was a mirage. But this was no mirage. I had discovered a 200 plus step climb at 511 ft. I ran up this hill. Huffing and puffing all the way up until I almost passed out at the top. It would have been wise to bring water with me. Maybe next time. The reward for your climb is this amazing panoramic view of Los Angeles to Santa Monica. I took a moment to take it all in. With little energy, I selected a trail which led me to a structure virtually hidden from the street below. The Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook. Built about 1 year ago. Who knew this place existed? I went online today and realized many did.

18o Degree South Premiere + George Takei Petition

Last night my friends (pictured here) invited me to the Eli Broad Theater in Santa Monica for the premiere of 180 South, a documentary about recreating the adventures of Yvon Chouinard (Owner of outdoor gear and clothing company, Patagonia) and Doug Tompkins (Environmentalist) voyage to Patagonia in South America. The premiere opened with a beautiful performance by Makohe. Afer this inspiring film ended we were treated to an art show featuring photography shot during the filming of the documentary. Lucky attendees also had a chance to pick up limited edition prints by Sheperd Fairey. Unfortunately, this is the only screening in Los Angeles. Next screening will be in San Francisco at The Victoria Theater. Visit Woodshed Films

The Getty Museum and Aftershock LA

Yesterday the kind folks at LeBasse Projects invited staff and artists to a private viewing at the Getty Museum. Some areas prohibited the use of photography, so these are all I had.
And if you want to plan your weekend for a worthy cause, you can join me this Saturday at Royal/T. They will be hosting Aftershock LA. It's a charity art auction to benefit Build Change (an international non-profit social enterprise that designs earthquake-resistant houses in developing countries and trains builders, homeowners, engineers, and government officials to build them). I will be participating along side The Clayton Brothers, James Jean, Audrey Kawasaki, Yumiko Kayukawa, and Frohawk Two-Feathers. Check out the preview here.

I'm glad I got to see friends, Michelle Borok at GR before she takes off for Korea, Karen Nguyen who was a busy bee at the Gingko Press booth, and also met Susie Ghahremani for the first time. Of course I have no photographic proof of all of this. Extra points for Wendy and Sean for chauffeuring me around town! Perfect weather, good friends, and great company equals a super weekend.

It is kind of difficult to recap a memorable week in New York in just a few photographs but, here you are. First 3 are from my solo exhibition as I chat it up with the ladies and gents, my new sketchbook from NY, Kim and my folks at a jewish diner, Union Square Farmers Market, Lynne, Kim, Mom (Dad in the background), my friend Kate took me out to Newark for a dangerous but interesting evening, atop Harlem, atop the Rock, below Rockefeller Center, the best halal truck score was next to the Hilton in Manhattan (you could smell it a block away), Paparazzi and the Statue of Liberty, our last day in the city, and my Dad and I strolling through Times Square for our last night. Lucha Libre Night Sunday

My friend Jimmy has a college buddy that wrestles and I have never been to a lucha libre match so we went to check it out. I used to watch the WWF (World Wrestling Federation) as a kid, and this was more entertaining since it was in person. The characters had some interesting quirks. One masked man jumped onto the stage playing a trumpet while another did a Karate Kid crane pose. It surely satisfied my childhood wish to attend a live match. I would definitely attend another event. If you find one of these shows around your town, take a chance and try them out. You might find it more entertaining than watching television.

With my current sketchbook coming to an end (I have 4 pages to squeeze drawings in), I wanted to share with you a few treasured memories as lines and notes. They were done in San Francisco, Las Vegas, Mexico, and Hawaii.

I love old laundromats. This one is located somewhere in the Haight district of San Francisco.

These were some of the most amazing cloud formations I have every seen overhead in Las Vegas, Nevada. Sketched inside my hotel room at Mandalay Bay.

During a friend's bachelor party, I nerded out some time to sketch a few things in a club on a cruise to Mexico.

The LOST Underground Art Project

I am a big fan of the television series, LOST. I stumbled across it through a friend of mine. We watched the entire first season in a day. I couldn't pull myself away from the screen. It was unlike anything I have ever viewed. So, when I was invited to contribute to The LOST Underground Art Project to launch the final season, I couldn't resist. Pictured here is my contribution (sold) entitled, "A Muffled Concept of what We Considered Ubiquitous." Plus, the companion piece for this painting ia a portrait of Kate Austen. Inbound Mail: The Ark Project

Last week I got a surprise in the mail. It's a book entitled, "The Ark Project" which was created by my friends in Argentina, Diego and Chai, collectively known as DGPH and published by IdN. The book contains 210 illustrations of animals that can be found in the region you were born. My animal is Hawaii's state bird, the Nene Goose. It is on the endangered species list and can only be found in the islands of Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii. Artists included in this book are: Friends With You, Josh Keyes, Aya Kakeda. Tessar Lo, Roland Tamayo, and Yoskay Yamamoto. Other than the small cost to fuel production of the book, a large percentage of the profits will be donated to a wildlife organization. Clippers vs. Rockets

While the art world buzzes about Art Basel happenings in Miami this week, we are back in these great seats at the Staples Center. The Clippers battled against the Rockets last night to a 102-85 Clippers loss. There were a few sparks, some bad plays and just awful errors that killed us. I was however impressed that we kept up with Houston's pace. It was also nice but bittersweet to see Trevor Ariza back in LA. Thanks again Laraine!

Clippers vs. Timberwolves

I love basketball! Maybe it's the speed of the game or the way players seem to fly for just a moment. Well, yesterday I got these amazing seats courtesy of Laraine who hooked it up. She is a season ticket holder and has seen and met some amazing basketball superstars. Last night we were supposed to meet Marcus Camby, but that fell through. Most importantly, we won against the T-wolves in a 91-87 victory. Let's hope that Eric Gordon can play soon.

3 years ago, I was working in the video game industry and needed an outlet to develop my own personal artwork. Gallery Nucleus gave me my first opportunity to showcase my art in a gallery scene. The following year they graciously offered me a solo exhibition which eventually sold out. Now, they celebrate 5 years and I am again given the opportunity to share my art with you. This painting above is filled with allot of gratitude towards Ben Zhu and his amazing staff. It is my way of saying thank you for all of your support.

Last week #2: Giant Robot Biennale 2: 15 years

Proof that I was here. This may seem like just plastic, paper, and a safety pin on the back, but Giant Robot (GR) means allot to me. When I was going to the Art Center College of Design, it was the first time I had been away from Hawaii both in distance and length of time. Homesickness came easily. There was nothing in Pasadena that gave me the comforts of home. Then one day, I stumbled across 3 copies of GR and borrowed all of them. It was full of articles like: what did your mom pack for lunch, bento boxes, Kikaida, and Japanese cinema. These were things that I could relate too. Instantly, I didn't feel so homesick anymore. I guess it was because someone out here in Los Angeles appreciated the importance of these things. They were the components of growing up in the Hawaiian islands. Something that is dear to me.
Fast forward to Saturday, October 24 which was opening night at the Japanese American National Museum and I am part of this wonderful exhibition and celebration of 15 years of GR existence (see my contribution 3rd picture down). That night made me feel as if the magazine that gave me so much comfort had never left my side. Big mahalos goes out to GR team Eric Nakamura, Martin Wong and Michelle Borok. Congratulations!

Bonus: here is a photo of LeBasse Projects Gallery Manager, Kim Luangraj, me, George Takei (who introduced Eric Nakamura) and LeBasse Projects Graphic Designer, Becca Martin. I whispered in his ear that I love his appearances on the Howard Stern Show. George bellowed with an enormous laugh followed with, "Oh my!" Snap. And this is his reaction halfway through.

Before I made my exit, I had the pleasure of finally meeting Martin Wong who is co-founder of Giant Robot and his wife Wendy who is a fellow Art Center Alum. They had both tanned a bit from their recent trip to Oahu. I borrowed this picture of us from his blog. He is a really nice guy and deserving of all his success.

Last week #1: Hello Kitty 35th Anniversary VIP Event

It dynamically came and went. The much anticipated private party for "3 Apples" an exhibition celebrating 35 years of Hello Kitty curated by Jamie Rivadeneira. Royal-T (a Akihabara style maid cafe and exhibition space) opened it's doors to a packed room filled with artists, agents, and celebrities which included Paris Hilton, Perez Hilton, Kimora Lee and family, Joe Hahn (Linkin Park) and Dave Navarro. But most importantly, my friends are my celebrities.

For early attendees, I will include one of these "Rusty" bookmarks. They were printed, hand cut by yours truly and limited in an edition of 30. Endings: Scion Installation 5 Private Party

Everything has an ending and the Scion Installation Art Tour just did that on Saturday. We had a reception with dim sum for all the Scion artists, family and friends. I forgot to take pictures so this one is all you get. The blue girl is my image and she is being auctioned for only about fourty minutes more, then someone walks away with her. Thanks to Scion and their staff for giving me the opportunity to visit Miami and New York. You gave me some memorable memories with old and very new friends.

Thank you!!! You are the reason for the smile on my face during the opening of my solo exhibition. Family, friends and fans came from near and far (Hawaii, San Francisco, England, San Diego, Riverside and Japan). It was pretty overwhelming to say the least. I spent this morning floating amid a magical landscape of salt water. Until the phone rang. It was Maria Kwong, Director of the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles. The local news (NBC 4) wanted to do an abrupt feature on the ongoing Kokeshi exhibition and she wanted me to talk about my experience participating in it. So without time to change, I blasted-off to the downtown district, waited for the crew to set up, enjoyed Maria speaking about the exhibition and got filmed for about 5 minutes. Thanks to Christina Conway for sending me the video link!

A SDCC Recap ...One Week Later

I probably should have posted this sooner. SDCC 2009 made it possible to meet up with allot of old friends and to make new ones. I found friends in every corner of San Diego. Darren and Jacinda at the train stop, Ben Zhu and Jack and Francine Muramatsu at lunch, in the con: Diego and Chai of DGPH, Braddah Aaron Martin, Plex Lowery, Travis Louie, Hung-Hei Yung (who took the photo of Brandi and me signing), Eliza Frye, Christina Conway, Attaboy, James Jean, Ron English (thanks for visiting me!), Honda Ngo, Yoskay Yamamoto, Nate Frizzell, Beau Basse and Mari Inukai. Also made new friends who gave me some gifts to take home.

I met Mark Murphy while party-ing-it-up at Art Basel in Miami. I attended the screening to his directorial debut too late to see his film. He kindly dropped these babies on me. Dude your awesome!

Wonderful guy David Mack who is well know for his ongoing series entitled, Kabuki. I used to follow his comic in high school, so it is really cool meeting him in person. Thanks David! Now I have allot of reading to catch-up on.

Last but not least, big thanks to my friends Christina and Francis who housed me while in San Diego. See you guys in about one month!

Private Japanese American National Museum Preview

Yesterday contributing artists and museum donors were invited to a private viewing of the "Kokeshi from Folk Art to Art Toy" exhibition at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles. Curated by Christina Conway (6th picture down with participating artist, Ken Guardino), this exhibition showcases 100 artists interpreting the old-time tradition of painting kokeshi dolls. The 3rd picture down is my contribution. Other participating artists included: Kent Williams, Tara McPherson, Amy Sol, Stella Im Hultberg, Jeni Yang (4th picture down with me), Yoskay Yamamoto, Tessar Lo, and Travis Louie. Thanks to Christina and Maria for curating an amazing show and keeping it a fun experience. Go see it today!

R.I.P Rusty (1994-2009)

It was my pleasure to have him around for 15 years. To me, Rusty was the friendliest cat in the world. He greeted strangers, played with children, opened screen doors, hand fed himself and shared meals with roaming animals which also included birds. Then at dusk he would curl up in your lap and drift away.

Yeah, it's now officially summer time! My wonderful web designers in Barcelona (more about that soon) are finally enjoying their sun moments too. They even have a holiday for it's arrival.

Yep, it's a good time to travel and my artwork is doing all the back-packing. Actually, yesterday was the first day of Art Amsterdam in Holland where a few of my paintings exhibited with Willem Kerseboom Gallery (stand#110). Art Amsterdam will continue through May 17, 2009. Afterwards, these paintings will travel to Willem Kerseboom Gallery for a group exhibition entitled, "The World a Cartoon" (contributing artists include: Yoshitomo Nara). If you are in town, go visit and discover some aloha spirit in Holland!
